The Bullseye New York Gallery presents artist Michael Rogers’ solo exhibition of cast glass and intaglio prints contemplating the passage of time. Whispered will be on view February 21 – May 16, 2015.

Michael Rogers’ practice is driven by antique store and ebay finds. Searching for items that show their age, Rogers transforms each piece into a new material. These disparate, transformed artifacts become dislodged from their original meaning and take on new meaning when combined with one another. Rogers likens this process to poetry in which meaning is created through juxtaposition. “With my work,” Rogers explains, “I create non-linear narratives using objects much like a poet uses words. The work becomes more than the sum total of its parts, a new invention evoking multiple associations in the mind of the viewer.”

In his recent work Rogers has become interested in vanitas, an artistic tradition that gained prominence in the 17th century focused on the impermanence of life. These symbolic meditations on mortality strove to remind the viewer that life is fleeting. Featuring works from 2007 to 2015, Whispered is a partial retrospective, looking back on how the artist’s visual combinations have evolved over time.

After spending 11 years in Japan where he was head of Aichi University’s Glass Department, artist Michael Rogers returned to the United States where he is now a Professor in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. Rogers’ work can be found in the permanent collections of the Suntory Museum of Art in Japan, First Contemporary Glass Museum in Spain, Museo del Vidrio in Mexico, National Museum in L’viv, Ukraine, and the Corning Museum of Glass in the United States.
