INTRODUCTION TO KILN-GLASS: An Expandable Course
Mon-Wed July 28-30, 10 am - 5 pm
Thu, July 31, 10 am - Noon
Instructors: Ted Sawyer, Lani McGregor & Guest(s)

Covering basic to intermediate technique, combined with straightforward design projects that integrate with and support the fundamentals of kiln process, this course was originally designed as a 12-week introduction for first-year college-level art students. In subsequent iterations the subject matter was compressed into a week-long workshop and eventually into a 2 1/2 day week-end workshop. In this BECon rendition we will take kiln glass instructors not only through the "how" but also the "why" of Bullseye's teaching method. Teachers will leave with 10 - 12 sample projects, plus the complete instruction manual that supports the course.

SET YOUR KILN ON FIRE: Combining Fusing with Torchwork
Mon, July 28, Noon - 5 pm
Tue - Wed, July 29 - 30, 10 am - 5 pm
Thu, July 31, Noon - 2 pm
Instructors: Bonnie Harder & Christy Corbett

Team teaching can take basic techniques into entirely new territory. Using the torch to create design elements to bring to the kiln, and using the kiln to create rods to bring to the flame, this course introduces students to both fusing and torchworking fundamentals and the overlapping design potential of their combination. Teachers will leave with three completed projects, a series of reference tiles and course hand-outs.

BOX CASTING: A Demonstration
July 31: 1 - 3 pm
Presenter: Ted Sawyer

Kilncasting in glass is a complex technique, requiring strong technical skill, and a solid knowledge of sculpting, mold-making and firing. Box casting is a relatively simple and direct method that removes many of the variables and much of the mess as the student is introduced to achieving depth in a reverse-relief image. This course makes a good follow-up to the Introduction to Kiln-Glass course, but is also offered to a larger audience as an independent demonstration.

PATISSERIE DE VERRE: A Demonstration
Thu, July 31, 2 - 5 pm
Presenter: Charissa Brock

The look and feel of complicated and technically-challenging thin-walled pâte de verre work without mold-making. This method utilizes frit, confetti and stringer to create detailed components and ultimately to create a small bowl form. The method is one which can easily be inserted into the curriculum of beginning to advanced programs and is appropriate for all ages.

INDEPTH IMAGERY
Tue - Wed, July 29 - 30, 10 am - 6 pm
Mon, Aug 4, 10 am - Noon
Instructor: Jeremy Lepisto

An introduction to paints, silk-screening, powders and frits that allows for delicate line-work and subtle shading at various levels of the kilnformed glass object. This is a hands-on class with the opportunity to create a palette of sample tiles and a thick block. The methods explored are those that artist Jeremy Lepisto employs in his own works which may be seen at Seattle's William Traver Gallery.
