Visit some of Portland's most interesting kilnforming studios for art and architecture.
Jeremy Lepisto & Mel George's Studio Ramp serves as a workshop to create their own works in kilnformed glass while also executing architectural and other large scale works for local and regional artists.
Ray Ahlgren's Fire Art. Like most Portland studios, this one is "close to home", compact and remarkably innovative in the production of architectural scale works in kilnformed glass.
Linda Ethier's casting studio is designed to create her cast glass sculptures using a variety of mold making techniques. She balances her career as an exhibiting artist with innovative, site-specific kilnformed work for public spaces.
George Batho has fabricated many kilnformed glass projects for architectural installations. His well-equipped studio, with large kilns, overhead cranes and expertise makes George the most efficient one-man shop in Portland.
Balance I, Steve Klein
ONE PIECE, TWO COMPONENTS, THREE COLORS • Steve Klein [SOLD OUT]
Saturday, July 9 - Thursday, July 14, 2005
10am - 6pm, except July 14, 9am - 1pm
Bullseye Factory R&E Studio
Item #8441
$800
This workshop is for experienced kilnworkers. Beginning with drawings, we will develop concepts that explore thought, design, form, and formal relationships while also developing a technical vocabulary using heat, gravity, glass, and coldworking methods. As a class we will cultivate a supportive dialogue infused with constructive criticism and observation. Each student will be asked to participate in discussions and to share their knowledge, ideas and experience.
The focus of the workshop is therefore less concerned with finishing a piece than it is with exploring a thoughtful process. As the title implies, however, each student will make one "piece" that is made up of two different components, or forms, using an extremely limited palette of three colors: black, white, and clear.
Panchina di vetro / Glass bench, Silvia Levenson
THINKING IN GLASS • Silvia Levenson [SOLD OUT]
Sunday, July 10 - Thursday, July 14, 2005
9am - 5pm, except July 14, noon - 4pm
Bullseye Resource Center
Item #8442
$700
Silvia Levenson's work is never based on technique or technical virtuosity, but rather on how to make visible her thoughts and her sense of perplexity about the world. In making objects or designing an installation, she does not begin by thinking of what she can do, but rather what she wants to do. In this workshop, she will accompany students in the realization of works using the same methodology that she uses in her own studio. The basic glass working techniques will be open-faced kilncasting.
Inside Expanse 5, Jessica Loughlin
TRANSLATION • Jessica Loughlin [SOLD OUT]
Monday, July 18 - Monday, July 25, 2005
9am - 5pm except July 25, 9am - 1pm
Bullseye Factory R&E Studio
Item #8448
$950
There is often more to successful work than its fabrication. This class is designed for students that already have strong kiln forming knowledge and now wish to push their work further, by focusing on idea development and translation of their ideas into glass. In the workshop we will discuss the reasons why we make our work and what informs the decisions during the design process. Time will be spent on group discussion, model making and glass tests before completing a final piece. The technical focus will be on mastering kilnforming and cold finishing techniques relevant to student individual ideas. Demonstration (techniques covered) will include fusing with sheet and powders, fiber and plaster silica mold making, slumping, and an emphasis on cold finishing, particularly lathe working.
Still Life - Lineage of White, Deborah Horrell
2-D/3-D, FROM PAGE TO PEDESTAL: PÂTE DE VERRE VESSELS • Deborah Horrell [SOLD OUT]
Tuesday, July 19 - Saturday, July 23, 2005
9am - 5pm except July 23, 10am - 1pm
Studio Ramp
Item #8449
$725
Drawing will initiate the creative process and help students develop forms to be made three dimensionally. Selected drawings will be translated into hollow vessels through pâte de verre. Mold making techniques will be demonstrated, firing schedules discussed and hand-outs provided. Students will work with clay positives to make forms for mold-making. During the session, students will also work on interpreting pencil drawings to drawing with frit on glass. Students do not need to be accomplished drafts people, but familiarity with kiln-casting is advantageous. Guest lectures and demonstrations will supplement workshop information.
Kings Cup & Queens Cup, Alicia Lomné
PÂTE DE VERRE, METHODS TO FORM BY • Alicia Lomné [SOLD OUT]
Monday, July 18 - Saturday, July 23, 2005
9am - 5pm except July 23, 10am - 2pm
Bullseye Resource Center
Item #8446
$800
Pâte de Verre is a term used to describe a wide range of working methods and glass objects, and even so, there is still tremendous room for exploration. In this experimental workshop, students will explore a variety of processes used by Lomné in her thin-walled, carefully colored forms. This will include model making, mold construction, color mixing, inlay design, texture control, firing cycles, and coldworking. Students need not have extensive experience with glass, though a love of involved processes and a willingness to risk will propel you to success in this class. By the end of the workshop, students will be fully capable of working in these methods on their own.
Capricorn, Frantisek Janák
COLDWORKING • Frantisek Janák & Chad Holliday [SOLD OUT]
Monday, July 11 - Thursday, July 14, 2005
9am - 5pm
Batho Studio
Item #8443
$600
Though many glassworkers seek to avoid coldworking, it often is necessary, and in fact, many artists plan on (and even enjoy) using the processes to bring a higher level of resolution to their work. Learn sculptural and finishing techniques in the coldshop from two practitioners to whose work coldworking is central. Hand-held tools, lathes, flat wheels, and saws will help you cut, grind, polish, facet, texture, and carve solid pieces of glass. Students will learn about various types of equipment and compare a variety of grinding media including silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, diamonds, and others.
