She Comes By It Naturally

Last weekend, the hottest of Portland’s summer, Alicia Lomné finished teaching her workshop Pâte de Verre, Methods to Form By. Then, after a quick wardrobe change, she powered through and treated an appreciative audience to a fascinating artist talk about how she does what she does and why she does it. Lomné was raised to be an artist, by parents and grandparents who were artists before her.

After sharing slides about her artist forebears and a sampling of images showing the evolution of her work, she invited us all around the table to see how to manipulate glass powder.

Lomné is an avid collector and maker of hand tools to fit her precise needs.

She has developed a keen sense of the properties of the materials she uses--not just glass powders, but the damp plaster mold surface and how these interact.

While in one sense, choosing life as an artist was the path of least resistance because of her family, it is still a path with a steep climb. Lucky for us, she took the challenging route anyway. Enjoy more of her work at her website.
