You need JavaScript enabled to view it Can I enter Emerge with just one piece, or will you require an overview of my work? You may choose to enter one piece or as many as six pieces in Emerge 2012. If I enter several pieces of work, should they be similar to each other, or should I strive for variety? That is completely up to you. However, you may want to keep in mind that in past Emerge competitions, some jurors looked for consistency in one area (i.e. quality, form, or idea) when considering multiple entries from one person. Can artists from outside the United States participate? Yes, the competition is open to artists worldwide. My piece is a sculpture made of 50% Bullseye glass and 50% steel. However, the glass component is the focus and most important part of the piece. Does my piece qualify? Yes it does. Mixed-media objects qualify as long as Bullseye kilnformed glass makes up at least 50% of the finished pieces and provides their material focus. My piece is a vessel that sits on a removable wooden pedestal. Considered together, the wood is about 60% of the piece and the glass vessel is about 40%. Does my piece qualify? If the glass vessel can be considered a “stand-alone object,” it will qualify. By “stand-alone object,” we mean a piece whose meaning or focus is independent of the pedestal. Such a piece could be viewed without a pedestal or on a different pedestal and still retain its meaning and focus. I'm doing Bullseye rollups, and I hire a gaffer to blow out the pieces for me. Do these pieces qualify? Yes, you may enter Emerge if you hire a gaffer to blow rollups that use your design. You should mention the gaffer in your application in the space where the work is described. With the gaffer's permission, s/he will be credited in the exhibition and photos of the work. Can I win more than one award? Yes, it is possible to win one of the category awards and also win a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Award. The category awards are: Academic Award, Jewelry Award, Design Award, Kilncasting Award, and Newcomer Award. How many people will enter Emerge 2012 and how many finalists will be selected? This year, we expect about 300 people to apply to Emerge. The jury will select 40 finalists. What are the criteria for judging used by Emerge 2012 jurors? The criteria our jurors use to evaluate work are:
Jurors may also choose to be influenced by attributes that are important to them as individuals, such as originality or level of difficulty or aesthetics, for example. How does the online jurying process work? Jurors score the online applications independently, without consulting one other, in a process that involves three rounds of judging. The first round of judging is purely visual. In the second and third rounds, jurors are given access to the artist statements and bios. Can a team enter? Can team members also enter individually? Yes, teams are eligible to submit to Emerge. In filling out your application, please indicate clearly that the works submitted were created by a team. Team members may also enter additional works as individual artists by completing separate applications. What kinds of slumping molds are allowed for functional pieces? Any molds, including Bullseye molds, are allowed for the functional part of the competition. |
