Those attending this presentation will learn not only about making stringers, still the most common use of the Vitrigraph kiln, but also how to make patterned and cased canes that historically have been the provenance of the hotshop. HOW TO WRITE AN EFFECTIVE ARTIST STATEMENT • FREE SPECIAL EVENT Sunday, November 16 • 1pm-4pm An effective artist statement can open doors for an artist, influencing gallery directors, curators, and art critics. This much-misunderstood tool should be a component of every artist's press packet or Web site. Yet many who are gifted in the realm of the visual have difficulty translating their creative intent into words. Internationally published art critic and author Richard Speer demystifies the artist statement in his three-hour workshop, a blend of lecture, group participation, and one-on-one constructive critique. Speer answers such questions as: What are the four essential elements every artist statement should have? What are the four most common mistakes to avoid? What length should an artist statement be? And how can you turn your visual and conceptual ideas into prose that will engage gallerists and the media? Participants will gain the tools needed to craft professional-caliber artist statements reflecting their unique strengths. Learn more... |

BULLSEYE CLASS AT GLASS FORUM April 28-May 2, 2008 Kilnforming with powders, frits and stringers offers the glass artist a rich medium for self-expression. This course is designed to develop a strong foundation in the use of these materials as a painterly or drawing medium, while teaching practical applications of 2D design theory. Early, guided exercises will build the student's understanding of the materials and the techniques of applying and manipulating them, and additional exercises will demonstrate the use and interaction of color. A multi-layered “thick block” project will enable the student to begin to take two-dimensional compositions into the third dimension, while the final project will allow the student to confidently pursue a subject matter of choice. Bullseye Gallery Features April Surgent April Surgent is a graduate of the School of Art, Australian National University, Canberra. Her fused and cameo-engraved glass panels have a story to tell, recalling glimpses of people and places like translucent fragments of memory. In late 2005, she spent four months traveling in Spain and Europe where she cataloged her travels through writing sketches and photography. Later, she translated her documentation into a body of work for this solo debut, A Meandering Tale, at The Bullseye Gallery.
Bullseye Box Casting Demonstration Box casting is a kilncasting technique in which an object is cast inside a box-shaped mold made from high temperature materials. Kilncasting glass is usually a complex technique. It requires strong technical skill and a solid knowledge of sculpting, moldmaking, and firing. For those of you fortunate enough to live in or near Portland we hope you can attend this box casting demonstration. You'll be introduced to a simpler method of creating a reverse relief cast glass object with the optical clarity of a furnace casting. Using plaster silica design elements in a specially formulated open-faced mold, the process removes many of the variables and much of the mess. This event is free and open to the public but seating is limited. Reservations may be made between July 11-21. Only a confirming phone or email RSVP reserves your place so call (503) 227-2797 or email resourcecenter@bullseyeglass.com within these dates. A full class in Bullseye Box Casting is included in our fall class schedule, to be announced on July 13.
