Deep Drop Vessel Form

Postby Twin Vision Glass » Wed May 11, 2011 6:28 am

I am going to attempt a large drop vessel to form a 1/2 lentil shape . It is 28 inch long and 17 inchs wide and 1 1/4 inchs thick . It will be interesting to see if the bottom and top fire is sufficiant . I do not have side fire and wish I did. I want to go about 7 inchs deep and bet it will take about 8 hours to drop. I am dropping through a cut fiber board in the shape of a pointed oval . I am very excited to start the firing. Lots of interesting things that will happen when the layers of glass start to move downward. Then comes the water jetting to cut the shape as my saw is not deep enough.

My twin sister Melanie and older sister Megan also join in and create beads and beading for me to hang off a panel out of the cut offs . It will be the fourth firing for the cut-off so it will be used very carefully. But matching colours is alot of fun for my sisters who are very good with matching just by letting them know the colours used in the glass. Melanie casts and fuses tooo so has all the glass at her finger tips and cuts strips out of the sheets and flameworks with those so that all the colours match.

Slices from this colourbar are also in the piece and I look forward to seeing how they look stretched out.

This is almost finished firing and then comes the deep slump. I hope my kiln is big enough. It will be alittle difficult as I will not be able to see the bottom for the drop. (accept perhaps a small view from the far corner underneath . Fun though. A mystery almost. The water jetting will be interesting tooo as I have not done it on a deep piece and hope they can do it.
The exciting part is the top of the panel is the opposite colours of the bottom (or underside) so when it is cut it should look very interesting.

This is just the shiny side in the kiln. The depth will have some good effects I feel when slumped deep. I should perhaps explain the Opaline. It will soften and when light shines through the vessel will take on that almost sunset / amber shading. Right now it looks abit toooo white for the rest. BUT if it is back to the drawing board , I will change this piece for sure.

I like this section. There are layers we are not seeing here in the kiln so look forward to finishing.

The back of the panel is quite abit sharper. It will probably be the inside of the vessel. I would hope the outside of the vessel will look nice stretched as it moves downward.

P.S. I also believe that the Opaline looks sooooo off here with the colours BUT it actually looks lovely with the light coming through the back side.

Hello! Hopefully by Wed. or Thurs. the piece will be out of the kiln. (then off to the city of Calgary for water-jeting) I feel the slump did exactly (well almost) what I wanted. It was a 28 hour slump schedule and it was finished at 1180 F. I took 24 hours up to 1180 and held for 2 hours . Because of the thickness ( 1 inch and 3/4 thick ) it was getting alittle hard to view that the bottom had HIT the bottom , BUT I think it is good. I watched the shape as well as I really wanted a rounded ends vessel shape at the points as apposed to a canoe shape. Slumping deep was also interesting as the thickness made it difficult to totally feel confident that it had draped down the 10 inchs I was striving for. Wed. also is Thunder and Lightning day the forcast says soooo I hope it is finished in the danger zones.    so the waite begins.

Even though we hate to even think of special things breaking ! or even SHARING that it has done so, it is a learning tool for us all. The piece split open along the Burnt Orange glass. It was very thick, (1 1/2 inch) and only 5 inchs from upper elements. It was a chance to do it in this kiln , but I feel it was just tooo close. The split is interesting as happened on the way up I feel. Perhaps too warm inside the glass , and along way down, and while stretching downward, the dark area became tooo hot. :( Perhaps the technical staff might have a good suggestion (even though I know they will tell me tooooooo close to elements I think. :?:
Schedule is as follows.
-24 hours up to 1180 ( Could have gone 20 hours or 50 deg. per hour I feel)
-Hold 2 hours at 1180 Slump began nicely and kept slow. I thought I had beat the odds
-kiln drop to 900 F. and then Bullseye schedule for 1 1/2 thick
