Hello! I used to rent studio time at Bahava Hot Glass in Calgary , AB. some 25 years ago, and we would create stacks of glass and bring up to a tack fuse (or abit higher) and then pick up with Punti (we would melt some Bullseye glass onto the punty first so that it was all Bullseye glass. After reaching 1350 Deg. we then open kiln, pick up and rush to Glory hole. Then get nice and hot and proceed to make into a cylinder shape. (pushing the glass hard to make sure no bubbles are hidden or so that it is uniform)
To stack the glass to start off with, cut strips and set-up with a center being the color of your choice. If you want it all centered , then make every edge and around the center color the same. Once you pull the glass out, (and you can make it as thin or thick as you desire.) it should be very even cane.
