overfired glass on kiln shelf

Postby HERBFELL » Fri Nov 29, 2019 11:58 am

I did a boo boo! I now have glass solidly adhered to a kiln shelf.

Sadly, I have done this before. I tried just scraping/prying it off then, and ended up with divots in the shelf that were too deep and I had to trash the shelf.
I have an idea I would like to run by you guys.

If I heat the shelf up to maybe 1500 F, and then plunge the shelf into a bucket of water, do you think the glass will crack and come off the shelf or will the shelf also crack or am I just walking into an unforeseen nightmare here?

If anyone has a better idea, I'm all ears.

Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving!

I,too, have a glass-adhered shelf.....haven't figured out what to do with it either but I would never consider heating it then plunging it into cold water. That can't end well. The thermal shock would probably shatter it if you did manage to immerse it safely

Hope someone can answer your question with some clear advice on what to do. Good luck. Jen
