Monitoring Kiln Temperatures for Successful Annealing

Overview

To guard against the introduction of annealing strain in your kilnforming project, you will need to ensure it remains at a uniform temperature while passing through the annealing range. Cooling your work too quickly will lead to stress, which may cause it to break. The break may occur immediately upon removal from the kiln, or it may take days, weeks, months or even years.

This is especially true of larger-scale works, and also why the recommended cooling rate decreases as the thickness of the work increases.

In order to properly anneal kilnforming or glass fusing projects of any size, it’s crucial to be able to accurately monitor the temperature inside a kiln. This can be complicated by the size and shape of your kiln.
