E-MERGE 2010 RULES FOR ENTRY
Entrant Qualifications
The competition is open to all emerging artists working with Bullseye glass in some kilnforming or kilncasting method. For this competition, you are an “emerging artist” if you are in the early to intermediate stage of your career at the date of application, and your work in glass has not been represented by a gallery at a major international art or design fair, such as Sculpture, Object, Functional Art (SOFA, in the USA). If you are not sure you qualify as an emerging artist, please email your curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé to: e-merge@bullseyeglass.com.
Bullseye employees (full and part-time), employee family members, Bullseye contractors, and persons currently represented by Bullseye Gallery are not eligible to enter.
Material Qualifications
All works must be made of at least 50% Bullseye glass and be predominantly kilnformed or kilncast. Works that incorporate other glass techniques (e.g., lampwork, roll-up, etc.) will be accepted. Mixed-media objects qualify as long as Bullseye kilnformed glass makes up at least 50% of the finished pieces and provides their material focus. Artwork must have been created since January 1, 2008. No submitted piece of artwork may weigh more than 50 pounds (22.68 kg). (One person working alone must be able to install it.) Works must be available for exhibition in Portland from February through July 2010.
Classroom Work
We accept pieces that are made in classes or workshops, but they must be identified as such on the entry form. Include the name of the instructor and the institution or studio where the works were made.
Academic, Kilncaster and Newcomer Award Qualifications
To qualify for the Academic Award, the entrant must have been enrolled in an accredited, university-level (undergraduate or graduate) art program during any part of the 2008-2010 academic years.
To qualify for the Kilncaster Award, works entered must be kilncast, using Bullseye billets.
To qualify for the Newcomer Award, the entrant must have begun working (or taking classes) in kilnformed glass after January 1, 2008.
Application Fee
The application fee is US $35.00, payable by credit card.
If you are/were a fulltime student at an accredited university between 2008 and 2010, you are eligible for the student discount of 30% off. If you qualify for the student rate, enter the discount coupon code STUDENT on the CaFÉ website during checkout.
Entry Process
All entries must be submitted through the CaFÉ website: http://www.callforentry.org/
You may enter from one to six separate pieces of work. Note, however, that the CaFÉ system requires you to submit six images on the application—no matter how many pieces of work you enter. Therefore, your six required images will illustrate from one to six separate works. You may submit full views or a combination of full and detail views.
For instructions on how to prepare your images to CaFÉ specifications, see: http://www.callforentry.org/imaging_tips.phtml
In addition to images, you must submit a short biographical profile (500 characters or less) and a short artist statement (1000 characters or less). Your bio and artist statement should be submitted together within the application's “Artist's Statement” field.
All entries must be submitted by 5pm PST, December 7, 2009.

Jurors
Kate Elliott is a Seattle-based art dealer, appraiser, and consultant specializing in contemporary studio glass. She owns Elliott Brown Gallery, which currently operates in cyberspace, exhibiting and placing the work of major as well as emerging artists. Elliott began her glass studies in the 1970s with Harvey Littleton at the University of Wisconsin. She was among the earliest participants at the Pilchuck Glass School, where she has since served in many capacities—including as a member of the Board of Trustees and the Artistic Program Advisory Committee. From 1974 to 1988, Elliott worked closely with Dale Chihuly, helping to manage his early career. Today she is considered an authority on Chihuly's early work. Michael Rogers maintains a private studio practice in Honeoye Falls, New York, and is a Full Professor at Rochester Institute of Technology in the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences. Before joining RIT in 2002, he spent eleven years in Japan, where he was head of the Glass Department at Aichi University. Rogers has taught workshops at The Furnace in Istanbul, Turkey, and in the United States at Corning, Pilchuck, and Haystack. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Suntory Museum of Art (Japan), First Contemporary Glass Museum (Spain), Museo del Vidrio (Mexico), National Museum (L'viv, Ukraine), and the Corning Museum of Glass (USA). In 2008, Wallin mounted his second solo exhibition at Bullseye Gallery, showed pieces at SOFA Chicago and SOFA New York, and completed a stay as Artist-in-Residence at Vrij Glas Studio (Zaandam, Netherlands). How can I obtain information about e-merge 2010?
The most complete information is on our website: http://www.bullseyeglass.com/ Click on the e-merge 2010 button on the homepage. If you would like some Call for Entry postcards, contact us at e-merge@bullseyeglass.com
I'm having trouble with the online application process.
All questions about the function of the online application should be sent directly to the people at CaFÉ, who administer the online application service for us. You can contact them at http://www.callforentry.org/ Questions about e-merge 2010 policy should be directed to e-merge@bullseyeglass.com
Can I enter e-merge with just one piece, or will you require an overview of my work?
You may choose to enter one piece or as many as six pieces in e-merge 2010.
If I enter several pieces of work, should they be similar to each other, or should I strive for variety?
That is completely up to you. However, you may want to keep in mind that in past e-merge competitions, some jurors looked for consistency in one area (i.e. quality, form, or idea) when considering multiple entries from one person.
Can artists from outside the United States participate?
Yes, the competition is open to artists worldwide. You can review our rules and conditions at http://www.bullseyeglass.com/emerge/
My piece is a sculpture made of 50% Bullseye glass and 50% steel. However, the glass component is the focus and most important part of the piece. Does my piece qualify?
Yes it does. Mixed-media objects qualify as long as Bullseye kilnformed glass makes up at least 50% of the finished pieces and provides their material focus.
My piece is a vessel that sits on a removable wooden pedestal. Considered together, the wood is about 60% of the piece and the glass vessel is about 40%. Does my piece qualify?
If the glass vessel can be considered a “stand-alone object,” it will qualify. By “stand-alone object,” we mean a piece whose meaning or focus is independent of the pedestal. Such a piece could be viewed without a pedestal or on a different pedestal and still retain its meaning and focus.
I'm doing Bullseye rollups, and I hire a gaffer to blow out the pieces for me. Do these pieces qualify?
Yes, you may enter e-merge if you hire a gaffer to blow rollups that use your design. You should mention the gaffer in your application in the space where the work is described. With the gaffer's permission, s/he will be credited in the exhibition and photos of the work.
Can I win more than one award?
Yes, it is possible to win one of the category awards and also win a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Award. The category awards are: Academic Award, Newcomer Award, Kilncaster Award, and Popular Award.
How many people will enter e-merge 2010 and how many finalists will be selected?
This year, we expect about 300 people to apply to e-merge. The jury will select 40 finalists.
What are the criteria for judging used by e-merge 2010 jurors?
The criteria our jurors use to evaluate work are:
• Quality of concept and content
• Quality of craftsmanship
• Quality of design
Jurors may also choose to be influenced by attributes that are important to them as individuals, such as originality or level of difficulty or aesthetics, for example.
How does the online jury process work?
Jurors score the online applications independently, without consulting one other, in a process that involves three rounds of judging. The first round of judging is purely visual. In the second and third rounds, jurors are given access to the artist statements and bios.
